Solid State Physics-1 by hand notes of GPCJ free download |
COURSE CONTENTS:
Ø Crystal structure
Matter consists of one or more elements
or their chemical compounds exist in nature in solid, liquid, and gaseous states.
In solids atoms and molecules
are attached with one another by strong forces of attraction.
“The solid-state physics is the
branch of physics dealing with physical properties of solids especially the
behaviors of an electron in crystals.”
There are about twenty thousand
crystalline substances in the crystal kingdom.
Ø Lattice
A set of Geometrical points
that defines the position of atoms, ions, or molecules is called Lattice.
Ø Bravais Lattice
The lattice in which all
lattice points are equivalent is called Bravais lattice.
Ø Non-Bravais Lattice
The lattice in which some of
the lattice points are non-equivalent is called the Non-Bravais lattice.
Ø Basis
A group of atoms, molecules, or
ions attached to each lattice is called a basis.
Ø Crystal
A crystal is a solid in which
the atoms are arranged periodically.
Ø Types of Lattice
I.
Simple lattice or
simple cubic lattice (s.c)
II.
Body Central Lattice (b.c.c)
III.
Face Central lattice
(f.c.c)
Ø Base Centered Lattice
Ø Types of Bravais Lattices
Ø Two dimensional (2D) Bravais Lattice
Ø Square Lattice
Ø Rectangular Lattice
Ø Central Rectangular Lattice
Ø Oblique lattice
Ø Hexagonal lattice
Ø Primitive Unit Cell
It is the basic unit of crystal Lattice. “A cell which contains
minimum area in two dimensions and minimum volume in three dimensions is known
as primitive Unit Cell.”
Ø Conventional Cell
Ø Wigner Seitz Primitive Cell
Ø Lattice Constants
Ø Fundamental Translational Vectors
Ø Translational Vectors
Ø Number of Lattice Point per unit cell
Ø Simple cubic
Ø Body-Centered Cubic (bcc) Cell
Ø Face Centered Cubic (Fcc) Cell
Ø Symmetry Planes of a cube
Ø Parallel Plane of Symmetry
Ø Diagonal Planes
Ø Index system for Crystal planes or Miller Indices for Crystal
Planes
Ø Notable points about Miller Indices
Ø General Formulas
Ø Simple Crystal structure
Ø Structure of Sodium Chloride
Ø Cesium Chloride Structure
Ø Diamond
Ø Atomic packing Fraction
The packing fraction tells elements of an atom in a crystal.
The fraction of space is occupied by the atom in the unit cell.
The maximum portion of the unit cell occupied by the atom
Ø Packing Fraction of Simple Cube
Ø Packing Fraction of simple Cube (SC)
Ø Packing Fraction of body-centered cubic Cell
Ø Packing fraction of face-centered cubic crystal
Ø Interplanar Distance
The perpendicular distance b/w two parallel planes are known as
interplanar distance.
Ø Symmetry Operations
The symmetry operation is defined as the operation which leaves
the crystal and its environment invariant.
OR
If the operation exchanges the lattice point and the resultant
lattice is identical in symmetry of the arrangement of point to the first lattice
before the operation.
Ø There are following symmetric operations
I.
Translation
II.
Rotation
III.
Reflection
IV.
Inversion
V.
Glide (Reflection +
Translation)
VI.
Screw (Rotation +
Translation)
